Miscellaneous Remnants from an Abandoned Project

Some of this might be original, but most of it is quotes from other people.

The only way to truly reach Eris is to realize that you are Eris. But don’t get carried away with it; everything else is Eris, too.

Eris is always a surprise. A surprise is something human’s didn’t expect. And why should She conform to human expectations?

The Entertainment is just another control mechanism.

We’ve all read 1984. I’m not disagreeing with you here, but I look at the entertainments as a BF Skinner box…

The rat inside the box performs the correct response, receives reward. Positive reinforcement. Incorrect response, no reward. Negative reinforcement. Or worse: receives a shock. Positive punishment.

The problem is when the rat’s been in the box so long, he forgets what it’s like to hunt for his own food. He’s enslaved and is afraid to leave the cushy, predictable confines of slavery because let’s face it: it’s scary Out There.

At this point, you no longer need to reward the rat as much as you once did. Now you can get the rat to perform the correct response with threats that he will be forced out of slavery.

When I became convinced that the Universe is natural — that all the ghosts and gods are myths, there entered into my brain, into my soul, into every drop of my blood, the sense, the feeling, the joy of freedom. For the first time, I was free. I stood erect and fearlessly, joyously, faced all worlds.

And then my heart was filled with gratitude, with thankfulness, and went out in love to all the heroes, the thinkers who gave their lives for the liberty of hand and brain. And then I vowed to grasp the torch that they had held, and hold it high, that light might conquer darkness still.

How Children Fail
John Holt

The valiant and resolute band of travelers I thought I was leading toward a much-hoped-for destination turned out instead to be more like convicts on a chain-gang, forced under threat of punishment to move along a rough path leading nobody knew where and down which they could see hardly more than a few steps ahead. School feels like this to children: it is a place where they make you go and where they tell you to do things and where they try to make your life unpleasant if you don’t do them or don’t do them right.

Many people seem to think that the way to take care of children is to ask in any situation what is the most stupid and dangerous thing the children could possibly do, and then act as if they were sure to do it. Little children are indeed very careful at first—watch them on a stair or some steps, deciding whether to step down forwards or crawl down backwards. They are eager to try new things, but at the same time they have a remarkably accurate sense of what they can and cannot do, and as they grow older, their judgement about this improves…

So many people have said to me, “If we didn’t make children do things, they wouldn’t do anything.” Even worse, they say, “If I weren’t made to do things, I wouldn’t do anything.”

It is the creed of the slave.

Schools tend to mistake good behavior for good character. What they prize above all else is docility, suggestibility; the child who will do as he is told; or even better, the child who will do what is wanted without even having to be told. They value most in children what children least value in themselves.

The Book of No Jargon

People will always misinterpret what you are saying. Listen to their confusion, go back, and rephrase. Do not inflict your language or world-view—this is like moving a mountain: such effort! such failure! Instead, show them that the pebble you speak of is already a part of their mountain. All you need do is look upon their mountain and find it. Speak your audience’s language and they will understand.

Naught but Ideas

To hold a belief is to be a slave to an idea:
a boring and repetetive stone in your mind.
To hold a woman is to be a slave to love:
an exciting and surprising passion in your soul.
Which would you rather serve?

“God” or woman?
“Nation” or wife?
“Freedom” or family?

Truly, the wisest men stay home!
Pity the lonely fool who has naught but ideas!

Once bread becomes toast, it can never go back.
bluetroutdoorknob

Does toast know its toast?
No, of course not.
Do you think you’re toast?
No, of course not.

But, if you were, you wouldn’t know it because toast doesn’t know its toast.

But what if you’re toasted, like toasted out of your freaking mind? Then you may think you’re toast. Kind of a double-negative of toasted toast which allows you to stick your head out of the pond and see what’s really going on.

I mean, toast always seems so content, it just lays there, maybe that’s because it can’t do anything… or maybe that’s because there’s nothing to do! What if toast already knows everything? I mean, drugs, sex, and gummy bears are all you need to know. Maybe toast has achieved enlightenment, somthing that’s always just out of our reach.

Just somethin to think about…
